Looking for inspiration for the perfect get-away at home this year? Well, we really are lucky we live in Ireland because that means we are never too far from stunning scenery and nature escapes that provide the perfect holiday.
From the beauty of our national parks like Connemara National Park and Wicklow Mountains National Park to the boundless West Cork coastline, we have so much choice practically on our doorsteps.
According to The Irish Times hunt for the Best Place to Go Wild in Ireland, the nation’s favourite wild destinations can be found in Mayo, Cork and Donegal.
In Cork, many people recommend Sheep’s Head Peninsula and Lough Hyne. In Mayo it’s Achill Island, Clare Island, Belmullet, Erris and Louisburgh and in Donegal, the ‘must-sees’ are Inishowen and Malin Head.
If you’re thinking of heading West in Galway there’s Connemara of course, but also think about Inishbofin Island. Kerry spoils us with the Dingle Peninsula and Waterford offers not only the Comeragh Mountains but also Mahon Falls and Tramore.
If there is one key recommendation we’d make though, it is to explore the newly promoted Wild Atlantic Way - Ireland's first long-distance touring route, stretching along the Atlantic coast from Donegal to West Cork. This remarkable coastal route stretches for 1,500 miles along Ireland’s dramatic western seaboard taking in some of the most enchanting scenery in the world.
Section One is from Donegal to Sligo by Malin Head, Fanad Head and Sliabh Liag.
Section Two will take you to Galway via Mullaghmore Head, Downpatrick Head and Keem Strand.
Next is the stage to Limerick via Killary Harbour, Derrigimlagh and the Cliffs of Moher.
Section Four is Limerick to Kenmare, taking in Loop Head, Blasket Sound and Skellig Michael before the final stage takes you to Kinsale via Dursey Island and Mizen Head. And there is nothing that says you can’t avail of a pub or two at each section!
It really is sensational. Enjoy a section for a weekend break or take a week and do the whole way!
