123GO - FAQ

Please contact our Customer Care team on 01-5246029 if you require further information.

How does 123GO work and what benefits does it offer?

At 123.ie, we're always trying for better. That's why we created 123GO young drivers Car Insurance. 123GO is all about getting young and inexperienced drivers on the road. Our simple black box solution will have you out and about in no time.

Once you purchase your 123GO policy, we'll install a small black box in your car which will monitor your driving. Once you have the 123GO Box installed in your car, it starts transmitting data. We'll send you an update each month on your usage.

123GO encourages safe and responsible driving. If we detect excessive speeding, you will be issued with a speeding alert. We operate a three-strike system. This means on your third excessive speeding event, your policy will be cancelled. However, if we deem your driving to be 'Unacceptable', we have the right to cancel your policy with immediate effect. Remember that cancellation could impact your ability to get motor insurance in the future.

Bear in mind that the 123GO Box will continue to record how the car is driven regardless of who is driving the car. Check out our 123GO FAQ here for more information about the 123GO Box.

We offer 2 levels of cover on 123GO with features and benefits to suit your needs and budget, 123GO comprehensive and 123GO Third Party, Fire & Theft. Can't decide which cover type would suit you? Simply compare the benefits in our 123GO product page. For full cover details, limits and exclusions, please refer to the 123GO Policy documents.

How will my driving performance affect my renewal?

A good driving score can get you a discount of up to 20% off your renewal.

What is a Black Box?

Put simply, it is a small black box that we fit to your car once you've purchased your 123GO Car Insurance policy. It will be professionally fitted somewhere out of sight and is a little larger than a smart phone.

Once fitted it records information about your driving. You'll get an update on usage by email each month.

We'll take your driving performance into consideration when we calculate your renewal price after year one. So make sure to drive safe.

Can I drive my car before the black box is fitted?

Yes, you are insured from your policy inception date, but you’ll need to get your black box fitted within the first 14 days of cover, or your policy may be cancelled. The box fitting process is really straightforward.

Our installation partner will contact you (normally within 48 hours) or you can give our installation team a call on (01) 5314534 to arrange for your black box to be fitted. It can be fitted at your home, work or place of study, at a time convenient to you.

How long will it take to fit the 123GO Box?

The fitting process takes on average 30 minutes for most cars. You can arrange it with our installers on a day that suits you. The day before your appointment, you'll be given an AM or PM time slot. The black box can be installed at your home, work or place of study. It must be installed within the first 14 days of cover.

How big is the 123GO Box and where is it fitted in my car?

Your 123GO Box is fitted by a qualified auto engineer. The box is a little larger than your average smart phone and will be fitted out of sight, depending on the type of car you have.

Can the installation be done at any location?

It can be installed at pretty much any location of your choosing, like home, work or college. There are a few locations where we can't complete an installation and they are listed below:

  • Underground car parks or paid car parks.
  • On a busy road in a built-up area.
  • Islands off the main land - if you can bring your car to the main land, we can install the 123GO Box.
  • Some workplaces like army barracks or schools may not allow access so you'd need to get approval in advance.

Will the 123GO Box damage my car?

No, it doesn’t interfere with any part of the car. The boxes are fitted by a qualified auto engineer, and are designed in a way to not cause any faults to your car. If there has been an issue with your box fitting, we would be more than happy to investigate this for you, so please do contact us. When your policy ends, the device is remotely deactivated and will not affect your cars performance, there is no requirement to remove it.

Is there an installation charge?

No, your insurance premium covers the cost of installation.

What happens if my 123GO Box stops working or is faulty, do I have to pay to get it fixed?

No, we have a team of experts monitoring the data transmitted by the 123GO Box to validate its accuracy and to keep an eye on any anomalies. If something is flagged as unusual or it looks like there is an issue with the 123GO Box, then we will contact you to arrange a service call at no cost. The only exception being if there is evidence that the 123GO Box has unauthorised interference.

Will it be easy to detect if there were issues with the 123GO Box?

Yes, we have a team of experts monitoring the data transmitted by the 123GO Box to validate its accuracy and to keep an eye on any anomalies. If something is flagged as unusual or it looks like there is an issue with the 123GO Box then our engineers will contact you to arrange a service call.

What if I change my car mid-term?

When you change cars a new 123GO Box will need to be fitted to the new car. The device will not need to be removed from the old car because it will be remotely deactivated, so it is no longer transmitting data.

Can the 123GO Box be switched off?

When your policy ends or when you change cars, the 123GO Box in the car is remotely deactivated. Otherwise the box will be left on at all times. If the 123GO Box is removed or tampered with, the policy may be cancelled.

Can I remove the 123GO Box mid-year?

No, when your policy ends or when you change cars, the 123GO Box in the car is remotely deactivated. Otherwise the box will be left on and in the car at all times. If the 123GO Box is removed or had unauthorised interference with, the policy may be cancelled.

What incentives or rewards are there for good driving?

If you are an inexperienced driver aged between 17 and 24, you will generally find that there is a more competitive price with 123GO than on our standard product for the same risk details. We'll take your driving performance into consideration when we calculate your renewal price after year one.

Will my policy be cancelled for poor driving or for breaking the speed limits?

123GO encourages safe and responsible driving. If we detect excessive speeding you will be issued with a speed alert. We operate a three strike system. This means on your third excessive speeding event your policy will be cancelled. However, if we deem your driving to be "Unacceptable" we have the right to cancel your policy with immediate effect. Remember that cancellation could impact your ability to get motor insurance in the future. So make sure to drive safe and keep within the speed limit at all times!

Can I call Customer Care at any time to see how my driving is doing?

You'll get a monthly update by email showing how many kilometers you have used to date. If you have any queries about your usage, please feel free to contact 123.ie Customer Care on 01 5246029.

What information does the 123GO Box collect?

Your 123GO Box will measure and transmit various aspects of how your car is driven. These measurements will include (but are not limited to) the speed the car is travelling at, braking frequency and force, acceleration, cornering and sudden manoeuvres, kilometres travelled, time and date of travel and the car’s location. The 123GO Box will continue to record how the car is driven regardless of who is driving the car.

Does it track my location at all times?

Yes, the 123GO Box will track the location of your car at all times until a policy maybe cancelled or lapsed. The box has a GPS signal which will show you the last known location of the car. This is really handy if your car was stolen or if you were involved in an accident, as we can locate it very quickly.

Do you pass the data to third parties?

For data related queries please follow the link to our Data Protection Statement at 123.ie/general-terms-conditions

Do I have to buy my kilometres up front on the 123GO Car Insurance policy?

123GO is a kilometre-based policy so you can drive for the number of kilometres you select during your quote. We'll send up a monthly update by email each month so you can keep track of your KM usage. If you need to, you can call us to top up your kilometres during the year.

What happens if I use up the kilometres I have bought or go over my kilometre allowance?

At any time during the period of insurance you can call 123.ie on 01 5246029 to buy more kilometres. We will contact you if you’re looking likely to run out of kilometres.

If you exceed the kilometres available and continue driving, then your policy may cancel. You can prevent cancellation by topping up.

Is there a charge for kilometre top-ups?

There may be an additional charge to top up kilometers. 123GO is a kilometer-based policy and you can top up in increments of 1000km’s.

Can I add a driver to my 123GO policy?

Yes, just call us to do this on 01 5246029. The driver will need to meet our acceptance criteria and we’ll need to gather some details before we can offer a quote for the driver. The car is monitored regardless of who is driving so it’s important to note that if they are speeding, it could affect your policy. In addition, the kilometres they drive will also be deducted from the remaining kilometres on the policy.

What if someone borrows my car?

You can loan your car to another person as long as they have sufficient cover to drive the car. The car is monitored regardless of who is driving so it’s important to make them aware that their driving could affect your policy. In addition, the kilometres they drive will also be deducted from the remaining kilometres on the policy.

Do you have to be a certain age to buy 123GO?

Any driver from the age of 17 up that meets our acceptance criteria can buy this product. However, it’s targeted at young and/or inexperienced drivers and this category of driver will see the greatest financial benefit in comparison to our standard insurance product, provided you meet our other acceptance criteria.

Do you accept foreign driving licences?

We accept all UK and EU driving licences.

Can you buy this if you have no driving experience?

Yes, 123GO doesn’t require you to have already earned driving experience in the past.

Will the black box be removed from my car at cancellation or if the policy lapses?

No, once your policy cancels or lapses, the 123Go box is remotely deactivated and therefore no data is transmitted or journeys are recorded from that point.

If I am involved in a serious accident, will you contact emergency services?

Yes, if you are involved in a serious accident, all the appropriate steps should be taken to protect for your safety and report any incident to the appropriate emergency services and to us.
