My property is unoccupied. Am I still covered?

If your home is unoccupied for up to 45 days, your cover remains unchanged. However, if it is unoccupied for more than 45 days, certain coverages will be affected.

For example, theft, attempted theft, and vandalism are not covered once the property has been unoccupied for longer than 45 days.

For full details on how unoccupied periods impact your cover, see Am I covered if my property is unoccupied?.

How much should I insure my buildings for & what should be included?

You should insure your home for its full rebuild cost, not its market value.

This means covering the cost to rebuild from the ground up, including demolition and debris removal. Your sum insured should reflect everything that makes up the structure, including fixtures, fittings, and outbuildings.

To estimate your rebuild cost, use the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland’s guidelines and adjust for any high-end finishes.

For a full breakdown, see How much should I insure my buildings for?

What is my Policy Excess?

Your policy excess is the initial amount you're required to pay towards any claim. Excess varies by policy type—€300 for Car Insurance, from €250 for Home Insurance, and between €0–€300 for Travel Insurance.

Check your insurance schedule for your exact excess details. For more details, see: How do I check my policy excess?
