What is the definition of social, domestic & pleasure (SD&P) use?

SD&P use is the standard classification for private Car Insurance, allowing you to use your vehicle for everyday personal purposes without any work-related travel. This includes:

  • Personal travel, such as shopping, school runs, and running errands.

  • Leisure activities, like visiting friends and family or going on holiday within Ireland.

  • Commuting to and from work, if your policy specifically includes commuting. Always check your policy documents to confirm your level of cover.

What is NOT covered under Social Domestic & Pleasure?

Social Domestic & Pleasure does not cover any type of work-related or commercial use, including:

  • Using your vehicle for business travel, such as visiting clients or multiple work sites.

  • Carrying goods or passengers for hire or reward, like food delivery, ride-sharing, or taxi services.

  • Commercial or business-related driving, including any travel that forms part of your job beyond a simple commute.

If you need cover for work-related journeys, you’ll need a different level of insurance.

Do I need additional cover for commuting or work?

If you use your car for work purposes beyond standard commuting, you may need Class 1 Business Use. This ensures you're covered for work-related driving, such as visiting clients or multiple business locations.
