Am I covered to drive my car abroad?

Your 123.ie Car Insurance provides coverage for driving abroad, but the level of cover depends on where you’re travelling.

Where am I covered to drive?

Your policy cover applies automatically when driving in:

  • Republic of Ireland
  • Northern Ireland
  • Great Britain
  • Isle of Man
  • Channel Islands

You do not need to notify 123.ie before travelling to these locations.

EU Member States

In EU Member States, you receive the minimum legal cover required in each country. However, you can request to extend your full Irish policy cover for up to 30 days at no extra cost. Just let 123.ie know before your trip.

Non-EU Countries

For non-EU countries, check if your destination is part of the Green Card system. If so, 123.ie provides minimum legal cover, but full cover may be available on request. A Green Card can be issued for a €12.00 fee.

Do I need additional documents to drive abroad?

When driving outside Ireland, ensure you carry:

  • A valid Irish driving licence
  • Your insurance certificate and disc
  • A Green Card (if required for your destination)

If travelling to Spain, a Bail Bond may also be required. 123.ie can provide this for a €12.00 fee.

Does my Breakdown Assistance cover me abroad?

No, Breakdown Assist only applies within Ireland. If you’re driving outside the country, consider arranging separate roadside assistance for your destination.

How do I extend my cover for longer trips?

If you need full cover for more than 31 days in an EU country, or require a Green Card for a non-EU country, contact 123.ie Customer Care at 01 524 6029 before travelling. Additional fees may apply.

For full details of cover, limits & exclusions, please refer to your policy pack which was issued to you when you purchased or renewed your policy. Our current policy booklet can be found here.
