Is accidental damage covered under my buildings insurance?

Accidental damage cover provides protection in your home against sudden, unexpected, and visible damage that has not been caused on purpose. Knowing the specifics of this coverage ensures you have the right protection in place.

What does accidental damage cover include?

Accidental damage is included as standard on owner-occupied and holiday home policies that include building cover. It protects against incidents such as:

  • Accidentally putting your foot through the attic ceiling.
  • Unintentionally hammering a nail through a pipe in the wall.

Accidental damage cover extends to fixed glass, sanitary ware, and ceramic hobs forming part of the buildings.

Keep in mind that accidental damage cover is not included in our Landlord Insurance policies. If you’re a landlord, consider this when selecting your level of cover.

Are there any exclusions to accidental damage cover?

Accidental damage does not cover:

  • Damage after the property has been unoccupied for more than 45 consecutive days.

  • Damage when the property is lent, let, or sub-let to anyone other than your household.

  • Damage caused by water through seals or grouting.

  • Damage caused by alterations, demolition, or repairs to the building.

  • Damage caused by subsidence, ground heave, or landslip.

For full exclusions, refer to your policy document.

How can I check if my policy includes accidental damage cover?

To confirm if your policy includes accidental damage cover, check the following:

  • Your policy pack, issued when you purchased or renewed your policy.
  • Your insurance schedule for coverage details.
  • The current policy booklet for comprehensive information.
