Policyholders with a No Claims Discount Moving Abroad
If you’re moving abroad, understanding how your No Claims Discount (NCD) is impacted can help you plan ahead. The effect on your NCD depends on how long you’re away.
What if I'm abroad for less than a year?
If your vehicle won’t be used for over 28 days, you may choose to suspend your Car Insurance policy.
-
Suspending your policy - You’ll need to return your insurance certificate and disc. This may qualify you for a pro-rata refund, though an admin fee might apply.
-
Coverage during suspension - Neither you nor any named drivers are covered during suspension. But, fire and theft cover may remain, depending on your policy.
-
If someone else will use the car - Keep the policy active to maintain full cover.
If your absence extends beyond your policy period, consider cancelling instead.
Will my NCD remain valid if I’m abroad for 1 to 2 years?
Yes—NCDs generally remain valid for up to 2 years after your policy is cancelled or lapses, provided they’re not applied to another vehicle. If you return within this time, your NCD should still be applicable.
What happens if I’m abroad for over 2 years?
After two years, your Irish NCD may no longer be valid. But, if you’ve maintained a claims-free driving history abroad:
-
You may still be eligible for a discount when you take out a new policy in Ireland.
-
Documentation is required - Provide a No Claims Bonus Statement or a letter confirming your claims-free driving record from your foreign insurer.
Before you leave, check with your foreign insurer to ensure they can provide the necessary documentation upon your return.
How can I protect my NCD while I’m away?
-
Stay in touch with your insurer - Speak with us before leaving to explore the best approach for your situation.
-
Keep records - Maintain detailed insurance and driving records abroad to help with reinstating your NCD when you return.
